GUEST SERIES - Autumn 2021
In the Autumn we will be joined by guests from different fields, each of whom is committed to drawing. The format for the Guest Series will be for each guest to give a talk, then two weeks later they will lead a day long drawing workshop.
In the talks our guests will touch upon how drawing is a part of developing their ideas and working process, influences and their favourite drawings, and share thoughts on how the use of drawing has changed within each of their fields. These talks will be a chance to get to know more about drawing from different professional and personal perpectives. Workshops will provide a hands-on opportunity to draw from different angles, guided by some outstanding creatives.
Drawing With Light: Tracing, Projecting, Adapting and Grouping
Cathy Lomax is multi-faceted; a painter who has worked as a gallerist, make-up artist, and editor. Her work particularly focuses on femininity, masquerade, popular culture and film. In the workshop participants will be drawing from film, and working with found images and projection.
Seeing with Sketchbooks
Working as an illustrator, and artist, Molly Martin draws constantly in sketchbooks. Drawn to capture the beautifully ordinary moments of life, her talk and workshop will focus on how she, and other artists, work within sketchbooks.
Drawing complex structures
As a structural engineer, Tom Robertshaw spends his days exploring how creative structures can be made real. His workshop will place us in the mindset of an engineer, as he discusses how freehand drawing can be used in different ways at different stages of a design process.
REBECCA JEWELL & SANDY ROSS SYKES
Drawing Inspiration from Natural History
Both artists work with found and preserved flora and fauna, using a variety of drawn, painted and printed materials. In their workshop participants will 'draw from a nature table' using Rebecca and Sandy's exceptional collection of specimens from nature.
Drawing Sound: Exploring the connection between music and drawing
Lorena Cantó is a viola player, and a part of the critically acclaimed Jubilee String Quartet, who also works as a freelance graphic designer. Looking at art from the perspective of music, she will explore connections between sound and image, talking to Luci Eyers about shared language and ideas across art and music.
