GUEST SERIES
Our programme of Guest Talks & Workshops continues in the drawing studio in January, working with another 5 creatives from different fields in the Spring, each of whom is committed to drawing. These talks will be a chance to get to know more about drawing from different professional and personal perpectives. Workshops will provide a hands-on opportunity to approach drawing from different angles and gain further insight into drawing practices within different fields.
Our COVID Policy.
Spring 2022
We will be joined in the drawing studio by another 5 guests from different fields: fine art, graphic novel, architecture, DJing and choreography, each of whom is committed to drawing.
Drawing from Experience
Suzanne Holtom’s paintings are about the instability of experienced events, past and present, that we suspect underlies the conscious narratives in our lives. Her work is developed from a range of sources, from children’s tv to Baroque paintings and the cartoon landscapes of Chuck Jones. Suzanne will talk about drawing over the span of her career, and her workshop will centre around Poussin’s use of model making and drawing from invented scenes.
Telling Stories: the power of sequential art
Sarah Lippett is an artist, award winning graphic novelist and lectures in Illustration at the University of Edinburgh. Alongside her graphic novels, she creates socio-political reportage comics focused on the stories of diverse communities in locations across the UK and abroad. Sarah’s talk will uncover how she finds and shares stories and her workshop will use memory to explore the power of visual storytelling.
Drawing and Thinking, Sound and Dance
Jake Walker is a multidisciplinary artist and DJ working between drawing, video, dance, print, photography and sound, showing at nightclubs and raves. Jake has released music under his z0it alias on Quantum Natives and Crystal Mine Music; z0it is an alias geared towards experimental sounds and conceptual ideas around dance and choreography. Jake will talk about the ways drawing can be used as a thinking tool and starting point to make video, dance and sound works.
In the Moment
Anne Ryan’s work is constantly playful and surprising, as she mixes up a wide range of materials and cultural influences into her ‘cutout’ constructions. Sitting somewhere between painting and sculpture, her constructions are often installed in groupings which reveal connections between different pieces. There can be surprising shifts in tone when seen from different angles, creating an interactive viewing experience with complex, interconnected spaces. Drawing is central to the process. Anne’s work is widely shown, yet she maintains a sense of humour and generosity of spirit both in her work and in her teaching.
Architecture and drawing: Observation, interpretation, imagination
Phil Meadowcroft operates an award-winning architectural practice based in London. His main interest is in what binds communities together, and as an architect he sees drawing as central to engaging with the question of what makes a good building. He has kept sketchbooks constantly, as a way of sensing and recording spaces on his travels, merging observation and imagination. Phil will discuss how through drawing, conversations and ideas are made visible and negotiated towards definition of detail and built form. His workshop will look at ways of sketching places, spaces and how they are inhabited, drawing the locality around and within the studio.
LORENA CANTÓ WOLTÈCHE
Drawing Sound: Exploring the connection between music and drawing
Lorena Cantó is a viola player, and a part of the critically acclaimed Jubilee String Quartet, who also works as a freelance graphic designer. Looking at art from the perspective of music, she will explore connections between sound and image, talking to Luci Eyers about shared language and ideas across art and music.
